Scandinavian Outdoor Award for Sustainability Awarded to Primus SIP Power Gas for Pushing the Biogas Market Forward
Swedish outdoor cooking brand launches new outdoor fuel produced entirely in Europe to reduce carbon emissions
Louisville, Colo. (Dec. 15, 2022) — Primus, the Swedish cooking equipment brand, pushes biogas market forward with the launch of SIP Power Gas and has taken an important step to reducing its environmental footprint. SIP Power Gas is a new, more sustainable outdoor fuel sourced and produced entirely in Europe to reduce transportation and its associated Carbon Dioxide output. During the annual ISPO outdoor award show in Munich, Germany, Primus SIP Power Gas was chosen as the winner in the “Sustainable Product” category.
The competition for the Scandinavian Outdoor Award has been held since 2005 to support product and design innovations from Scandinavia and is organized by the Scandinavian Outdoor Group. The international jury – which is staffed with various experts – awards the best products based on functionality, quality, innovation, design and sustainability.
The jury concluded, “with the SIP Power Gas, Primus brings sustainability into the outdoor gas fuel market. The canister is still filled with fossil gas since biobased gas is not available in their production country today. Primus buys the same amount of biobased fuel certificates and creates a market pull and over time it will increase the number of facilities producing biobased gas and make it available on a broader basis. The canisters are built and filled in Europe to reduce transportation.”
“Reducing our impact on the planet is an essential value at Primus,” says Aiko Bode, chief sustainability officer for Fenix Outdoor, parent company for Primus. “The introduction of SIP Power Gas is our next step in leading the way to build the processes needed to phase out fossil fuels used in outdoor cooking. We are pioneering new ways of replacing old methods and materials with more sustainable alternatives.”
SIP Power Gas is Primus’s first product launch under the new Sustainable Improvement Program which positions the brand as a global leader in the effort to become more sustainable. Using the principle of mass balance to secure and support the production of biogas, Primus will leverage local resources and partnerships to purchase biogas from a dedicated production facility in Sweden. Made from food waste instead of fossil fuel, the biogas will be inserted directly into locally produced products. SIP Power Gas offers the same reliable performance as the original Primus Power Gas, a true all-around cooking fuel that performs in almost all outdoor conditions. Additionally, for more than a decade, Primus has purchased carbon offsets for every canister of Power Gas.
“We are humbled and proud to receive the recognition of the SOA jury. It is a clear sign that we are heading in the right direction and a great motivation to keep going and follow our long-term goals towards more sustainable products,” says Per Waag, Managing Director of Primus.
To become more sustainable in the production process as well, Primus has moved cartridge production and filling to Europe. This reduces transport distances. Together with the use of biogas through volume offsetting, the climate impact of the Primus SIP Power Gas greatly reduced compared to the previous Power Gas, making SIP the most sustainable gas on the outdoor market.
SIP Power Gas will be available exclusively at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s in the U.S. and MEC in Canada, followed by other retailers in Spring/Summer 2023.
SIP Power Gas is available in two sizes:
Dimensions: 108 x 85 mm – Weight: 390 grams
Dimensions: 108 x 137 mm – Weight: 645 grams
